goofing around with color

I am trying out the Nik Software Color Efex Pro 3.0 filters and processed a couple of photos with them as an experiment. The filters work as a plugin to Photoshop with a very neat interface.

The first picture, a shot from outside the Eliot Spitzer resignation, got a cross processing filter that I though was pretty cool. The second, a self-portrait, got a duotone filter and some film grain.

I kinda like them both.

new lights

I got some new lighting equipment today, so I had to try it out ... on myself.

I've decided to use Alienbees lighting for studio work, so I got a B800 and a large softbox. I took this with the new setup -- using my ABR800 ringflash with a grid for the backlight -- and am looking forward to working with some two-eyed models soon...

Playing with Light

It's fun to play with light. Earlier this evening, I shot some self portraits with a single, restricted light source -- a snooted SB-800 strobe on a light stand to camera left.

I was participating in a Strobist "Film Noir" lighting assignment. If you are interested in lighting, I highly recommend checking out the Strobist blog. I've learned a lot there.

Hope you enjoy the photos. Not sure which I like the best. Any thoughts?

Light on a Stick

I've been working with lighting a lot lately, and have tried to get the flash off my camera at every opportunity. It's not always easy to set up a light stand, though.

So, I grabbed this technique, which I saw first on the Strobist blog. And it works really, really well. Had to model it myself...
