I got some new lighting equipment today, so I had to try it out ... on myself.

I've decided to use Alienbees lighting for studio work, so I got a B800 and a large softbox. I took this with the new setup -- using my ABR800 ringflash with a grid for the backlight -- and am looking forward to working with some two-eyed models soon...

I've been hearing about value of ringflash -- apparently the greatest thing since sliced bread -- for a little while now, so I decided it was finally time to try one.

For my purposes, I chose the AlienBees ABR800, which is an affordable ringflash that is both flexible and powerful. As the UPS truck pulled up late this afternoon, I knew my first subject would have to be ... me.

This self-portrait is lit only with the ABR800 and has the telltale shadow that only a ringflash can produce. Since it surrounds the lens, the ringflash literally envelopes the subject with shadowless light. It's become very popular in fashion photography and I intend to use in studio as soon as I can.
